So Dan is always teasing the kids, in a brotherly kind of way. He is sarcastic with them and pokes fun a lot. They usually do very well with it, but sometimes I think they don't understand...."who is this person, my dad or my brother." It is all in fun, but it is even funnier to me when it backfires.
So this morning we were doing our daily scripture study and Dan has this joke with the kids(realizing they are only 6 and 8) that if they lose their place and don't know where we are when he calls on them, they have to do pushups. He is always saying it, if they don't start right away or if they ask where we are, he says, "That's push-ups!"
So this morning I thought, well maybe I will get in on the fun.(this never really turns out well, whenever I get involved with things like this, but it can be kind of funny.) So as the kids lost their places they were assigned 5 push-ups, Cordell got it twice, then there was a diaper problem with Luke and we paused for a minute. When we came back it was Katie's turn to read. She said, "Where are we?" (5 push-ups) and Dan looked down at his book with a look of "Uh, let's see," I could see his eyes scanning the page and finally after a long pause, he concluded that we were on verse 24. I said, "Aww, 5 push-ups." He disagreed, claiming that he knew all along where we were. (Yah!)
So we finished reading and he took off quick, I could tell he was getting out of there. I called for him a few times and he never came, so I asked Cordell to go tell him that I needed him. Dan knew what for, because he came into the living room with shoes in hand and said, "What? I need to go!" I said, smiling,(thinking it was funny and he would just say, Ok, and quickly do 5 push-ups with the kids and laugh and be done with it)"You forgot to do your push-ups with the kids." Boy did that open up a huge can! He immediately bit back! He claimed he had not lost his place and that he didn't need to do any. It proceeded to turn into the kids shouting trying to persuade him to do them with and him arguing that it wasn't neccessary. I told him it was the principle of it. If one of them had done what he did, they would have been given push-ups. All of us were doing it in fun, we were laughing and smiling as we tried to get him to come do them with the two kids. He of course was not smiling! The kids told him I was the boss and you could tell that really made him angry.
Finally, after arguing for a few minutes he stomped over to the living room, and quickly did 5 push-ups (It's not like they are hard for him, I am sure he could do 100 if he wanted to, not like me who would take a whole minute to do 10 or so). He got up very ANGRY! I couldn't believe it! I told him, it wasn't that big of a deal and he snapped back that he already had a headache and he needed to go to work! (not that it took longer than a few seconds)
I couldn't believe his reaction! I thought that if one of the kids had reacted that way he would have lectured and scolded them. My how the tables turned.
I don't know why he got so angry. I wasn't very supportive when I expressed my dissapointment in his reaction as he told me good-bye and slammed the back door. I think if it had been me, I would have just laughed and done the push-ups.....
